4 Reasons Why Confidence is Important in Life
Let us look at the famous story of the “Chained Elephant”. A huge elephant can be held in one place by simple chaining one of its legs to a peg on ground. Physically it’s a piece of cake for the animal to break free. But it doesn’t even try to. Why? Because it couldn’t when it was a baby. It had tried long and hard to break free when it was young, but couldn’t do it. It gave up knowing for sure that it will never be able to. And hence, even as an adult, it will never try to break free. Not because it can’t, but because it believes it can’t.
Don’t we all behave the same way in our lives? Most of the times, it is because of our lack of confidence that we fail in our endeavors. “Believe in yourself” – this phrase has been told a zillion times but do we actually believe in ourselves? Confidence plays a major role in everyone’s life. Be it to perform in sports or learn a new art, confidence is a must. Listed here are some reasons why confidence is important in life.
1. It motivates you
The first positive outcome of confidence relates to the overall emotional state of a person. A confident person is happy and highly motivated. It also creates a calm and peaceful mindset which helps in channelizing your thoughts and strengths.
2. It teaches you to expect good
The theory of self-fulfilling prophecy suggests that when you think/expect something to happen, it ultimately has a greater chance of happening. It is not a coincidence that 99% of successful people have high levels of confidence.
3. It teaches you to judge yourself
Under confident people are often their own worst critics. They have a tendency to blow a small negative aspect out of proportion and brand themselves losers at the slightest obstacle. Confidence helps you to evaluate your problems in the right manner and find out if they are realistic. It teaches you to refuse to accept unrealistic criticisms. Confidence helps you to rise up to the occasion and take the problems head on.
4. It makes you conscious of yourself
Self-consciousness is a major hurdle to self-confidence, especially in social situations. Diverting the attention away from yourself can help diffuse the situation but is that what your goal is? Who cares what people think? They aren’t the ones who bring coffee to you every morning or do your groceries. Live to satisfy yourself not the world. Confidence teaches you to stand up and say what you’ve to and do what you’ve to.
On the other hand, over confidence can ruin things. There is a fine line between confidence and over-confidence. If you cross the line, your fall is cent percent sure. So, be confident but not over-confident. Accept your limitations only when they’re realistic and not when they’re forced upon by your own narrow mindset.
