6 Ways of Getting Noticed by Your Boss at Your Workplace
Even if you are a sincere and dedicated employee with a consistent track record, you could be going unnoticed by your boss because of inexplicable reasons. Here are a few ways in which you can grab your boss’ attention and show what you are worth.
1. Stay back at work after everyone wraps up
One of the easiest ways of getting noticed by your boss is to stay back at work after everyone else winds up. Your boss is likely to pass by your cubicle when he/she leaves and may feel obliged to ask you about the work you are finishing up. Take this opportunity to show your boss that you are going the extra mile and doing more work than you are expected to do.
2. Seek your boss’ feedback from time to time
Key performance indicators may be your company’s and boss’ way of finding out how you have been faring. But taking personal feedback from time to time may help you carve out a special place for yourself in your boss’ mind. Your boss may get an impression that you are genuinely interested in improving and you are putting effort in seeking approval and acceptance for your actions at every step.
3. Let your boss know about your achievements
Sometimes the only thing that may be keeping you from getting noticed by your boss could be your inability to communicate your merit to him/her at the right time. Ensure that your undocumented achievements reach your boss’ ears. You must be very careful about the way in which you communicate your credentials to your boss. Be mindful about the right time, right place and the right tone as you may not want to come across as too pompous.
4. Make your boss feel good
The idea is not to say yes to everything your boss says but to say the right things. For example, if you know that your boss hates being late on deadlines, turn in your work earlier than expected. If your boss likes networking, be on his/her radar on social networking platforms. If your boss is particularly passionate about charity work, arm yourself with the latest information in the field of philanthropy which you can update your boss with. This may instantly increase your recall value in your boss’ mind.
5. Sign up for initiatives hosted by your company
Whether it is a CSR project, a training seminar or a community project hosted by your company, volunteer for it. This may or may not directly benefit your core job but it will give you easier access to your superiors. If you are one of the few employees from the whole organization who has taken part in such activities, your boss is likely to notice you quicker than others.
6. Seek your boss’s mentorship in certain projects or on an ongoing basis
Seeking someone’s mentorship can be a big ego boost for the potential mentor. By asking your boss to be your mentor, you may be able to hit many birds with one stone. Firstly, you can get direct access to your boss. Secondly, you can learn about leadership by closely observing how your boss functions and thirdly, you can mention in your resume that you were under the mentorship of an industry heavyweight.
